Cybersecurity 5G networks: the EU Member States present comprehensive 5G Security Measures

 NEWS

The toolbox provides a set of security measures effectively mitigating the risk in order to build and implement safe 5G networks across Europe.

Zagreb, 29 January 2020 - Being supported by the European Commission and ENISA, (Cybersecurity Agency at the European Union,) the EU Member States presented toolbox, made  to effectively address the high risks to 5G networks.

Referring to the results of the EU coordinated risk assessment which was published last October the toolbox ensures a set of security measures   effectively mitigating the risk in order to build and implement safe 5G networks across Europe.
In particular, tool measures aim to:

- design safety strengthening network use and operations;

- raising basic safety standards for the safety of goods and services;

- minimising risk exposure deriving from profile of individual suppliers considered to be high risk; avoiding or limiting large dependency on any single supplier with 5G networks;
- promoting a diverse, competitive and sustainable market for 5G equipment, including maintaining EU capacity in the 5G chain.

The toolbox presents detailed risk mitigation plans identified in the EU coordinated risk assessment. They consist of possible combinations of eight strategic and/or 11 technical measures (together with appropriate accompanying activities) intended to mitigate cyber-security risks, including risks arising from non-technical factors.

The conclusions of the toolbox provide recommendations on a series of key strategic and technical actions to be taken by the Member States and/or the Commission. More information is available on the link, which includes, among other things, a press release from today's press conference presenting the set of measures. The new measures were presented by the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission on Digital issues and competition Margrethe Vestager, Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for Internal market and Tonko Obuljen, President of the Council at HAKOM.
