HAKOM's warning: New attempts of fraud against users – this time with a text message!

PRESS RELEASE

HAKOM warns of a new attempt of abuse of electronic communications and fraud against users by means of a personalized text message asking users to return a call.

ZAGREB, 2 August 2016 – The Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM) received this Tuesday, 2 August, a notification about a new type of fraud, and those committing the fraud who are sending text messages from a foreign number have for the first time used users’ personal data to entice them call a certain number and thus create uncontrollable costs on their accounts. Users targeted by such a fraud attempt receive text message from abroad addressed to them and containing the following text “Hi (first name) (last name) call me please [unknown international number]”. For example, in one case the country code belonged to Senegal but the fraud might not be limited only to that African country.

HAKOM warns all users to be careful when they receive a call or a text message from an unknown number, in particular from international numbers, and to check with their operator before returning the call or the message.
