A decreased number of postal services at the beginning of the year

PRESS RELEASE

In the first quarter of 2021, almost all postal services recorded less traffic, except for express shipments related to the online purchases.

ZAGREB, 10 June 2021 – In the first quarter of the year, a decreased number of postal services was recorded and the negative impact of the pandemic on the postal items has been continued, except for those related to the online shopping. A total of 69.9 million postal services was recorded, 3.1 %t less compared to the previous quarter and 7.9 percent less compared to the same period last year. All types of postal items (letters, parcels and printed matters, recorded decrease in the number of services and the greatest decrease was recorded in  services related to the distribution of printed matters. Compared to the previous quarter, 20 % less printed matters was delivered and 28 % less compared to the same period last year.

Comparing the type of traffic, it is evident that a larger decrease was recorded in the international traffic, which is about 21 % less compared to the previous quarter. This shows that there are still some disturbances in the international traffic, but in the transfer of postal items a well, and that it will take some time to be normalised.

A smaller number of services also affected the revenues from postal services. Compared to the previous quarter, revenues decreased by about 4.8%, however, compared to the same period last year, the growth has been recorded of 10%. Compared to the previous year positive results were primarily achieved due to a larger number of express shipping related to online shopping with an increase of around 23%, and partly due to higher prices of a part of universal services.

The number of postal service providers remained unchanged. At the end of the first quarter, the services were provided by 23 providers out of which HP-Hrvatska Pošta d.d.  is the largest with 84.1% share.
