Continued growth of the postal services market

PRESS RELEASE

Increased activities on the postal services market in the Republic of Croatia at the end of the year resulted in the growth of almost all segments of the market.

ZAGREB, 10 March 2021.  In the fourth quarter of 2020.the postal services market in Croatia was heavily affected by the consequences of pandemic caused by corona virus, and in addition by the earthquake that hit certain parts of the country. However, the normalisation of most economic activities, in particular those affecting the demand for postal services, in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter affected market growth in almost all segments. In relation to the third quarter, the total number of postal services increased by 6.5 percent, but 9.1 percent less in relation to the same period last year, indicating that  it will take a long time  to the  recovery of the postal market the return to previous situation. The total increase in the number of services was mostly influenced by letters, which increased 6.5 percent in relation to the previous quarter, and parcel services, which grew again after the fall in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, cross-border postal traffic also partially normalised. The number of postal items in the international traffic has increased and, compared to the previous quarter, the number of services has increased by 36 percent, with a larger number of cross-border parcels and services connected to the e-commerce packages and services having the greatest impact. According to this the share of international traffic in the overall postal market was increased to 10.1 percent at the end of the year.

Positive market developments related to the realization of services also affected revenues, so that they are 14 percent higher than in the third quarter, but 4.6 percent higher than in the same period last year. Although the number of services is around 10 per cent year-on-year, revenues have decreased by only 0.4 per cent. The reason for this is primarily the realization of a larger number of services with some added value, that is, express services, which in 2020 were about 14 percent more than in the previous year.

In the last quarter of 2020, a new postal service provider appeared, and currently 23 providers are performing its services, the largest being HP-Croatian Post Inc. with a share of 82.7%.
