Due to Growing Fake News about 5G Technology, a Group of 15 EU Member States comes up with a common Strategy

NEWS

The letter sent to the European commissioners emphasized that 5G technology is a basic element of digital transformation and one of the foundations of economic recovery after the pandemic.

ZAGREB, 21 October 2020 – A group of 15 European countries, Members of the European Union, has launched an initiative to adopt a strategy to combat disinformation and fake news about 5G technology. A joint letter sent to EU digital chief Margrethe Vestager, internal market commissioner Thierry Breton and values chief Vera Jourova, whose signatory is Croatia as well, stressed that 5G technology is a basic element of digital transformation and one of the foundations of economic recovery after the pandemic.

Conspiracy theories led to incidents in as many as 10 countries where destruction of telecommunications equipment was recorded, but also physical attacks on maintenance workers. It is therefore necessary to take an active, long-term and systemic approach to address the concerns posed by new technologies and electromagnetic fields, according to the signatories, who are ready to contribute to the EU-wide initiative by expertise and best practices to address the problem of disinformation. The countries also propose more scientific research on the risks to human health, as well as awareness-raising campaign across Europe, but they also suggested a broad debate taking into account all fears and concerns of opponents to 5G.
