HAKOM: Domestic Postal Traffic in Decline

PRESS RELEASE

In the first quarter of 2020, there was a decrease in turnover in almost all market segments compared to the previous quarter, but also compared to the same period previous year.

ZAGREB, 10 June 2020 – In the Republic of Croatia, the upward trends in the postal services market, which have been  present in the past few quarters, were halted in the first quarter of 2020 resulting with decline of all market indicators.

In relation to the previous quarter, the total number of services performed decreased by 4.4% and by 5.4% compared to the same period last year. The decrease in the total number of services performed was influenced by a smaller number of all types of postal items (letters, parcels. printed forms), with the largest decrease in turnover compared to the previous quarter having parcel services of about 9%. However, compared to the same period of the previous year, only parcels, out of all shipments, had a growth in turnover of about 9%. Referring to the type of traffic, it can be seen that in domestic traffic even a slightly larger number of services were achieved than in the previous quarter of the same year. The overall decline in the number of services is primarily the result of a decrease in the international traffic, amounting to about 41%. Namely, the disorders in the international incoming traffic related to coronavirus (CIVILID 19) were observed as early as the end of January, which resulted in the aforementioned reduction in the first quarter.

The reduction in the number of services also affected the revenue generated by postal services performance and, compared to the previous quarter, they decreased by about 10% while the decrease in revenue compared to the same period of the previous year was below 1%.

A total of 22 postal service providers were in the Republic of Croatia at the end of the first quarter of 2020, which make one more  provider  compared with  the beginning of the year. A smaller number of services were accomplished by all providers, and their market shares have not significantly changed, so Croatian Post remains the largest provider with its share of 84.5%.
