Increased investments in fibre infrastructure despite lower revenues

PRESS RELEASE

In the last quarter, the internet traffic grew 51.5 percent in relation to the same period last year and we talked much more, but the total revenue on the electronic communications market decreased by 3.3 percent.

ZAGREB, 15 March 2021 — In the fourth quarter of 2020, the specific operating conditions caused by the pandemic continued on the electronic communications market. Primary and secondary schools and institutions for higher education partly performed their classes online and many companies in Croatia continued to work from home. Given the situation, data traffic, as well as the number of minutes in mobile and immobile telephone networks, it  is expected to increase compared to the same period in 2019. In the fourth quarter of 2020, data traffic reached a total of 613 PB. This is a 51.5 per cent increase year-on-year.

The impact of social distancing measures is evident in the number of outgoing minutes in mobile network, which grew 26.3% compared to the end of 2019. Also, due to fewer international trips roaming minutes of Croatian users have been reduced by 8.6 percent, and the duration of calls for foreign citizens in the Croatian mobile networks by 21 percent.

In 2020, total revenue on the electronic communications market decreased by 3.3% compared to 2019. The 3.2 percent revenue growth on the broadband internet access market and the 3 percent pay TV market still failed to compensate for a 10.7 per cent revenue drop from fixed and mobile telephone services.

Total investment in the immobile network declined 2.9 percent, but investments in the electronic communications infrastructure grew by 13.3 percent, or 15.7 percent in the fibre access infrastructure. A continued investment in broadband access infrastructure is important in order to keep the trend of high-speed broadband connections growing.

In the fixed network, the greatest growth continues to be recorded by the number of high-speed broadband connections. At the end of 2020 16% of users gained internet access with speeds greater than 100 Mbit/s, and growth is generated by connectors via optical access infrastructure of about 11%. 42% of users in the fixed network have speeds over 30 Mbit/s the total number of package users increases in all package categories: 2D, 3D and 4D. Most households have contracted one of the pay TV services, or almost 58 percent of them.
