HAKOM: Do not believe fake news because scientifically justified Connection between the 5G Technology and CIVIL-19 does not exist!

PRESS RELEASE

In addition to radio, television and other electronic communications networks, broadband and mobile communications networks which also provide information and communication to the public and emergency services in due period are also necessary in order to remain secure and connected even under these emergency conditions.

ZAGREB, April 17, 2020 - we have recently witnessed spreading of news about 5G technology through social networks and media that are neither scientifically nor professionally grounded. There is no scientifically and professionally grounded connection between 5G technology and any of the previous generations (2G, 3G and 4G), during the coronavirus spreading.

We are all aware that electronic communications, in the period of crisis, especially mobile communications, enable us to work from home, attend classes, contact with a family doctor or emergency services, communicate with family and friends and coordinate emergency services, civil protection headquarters and all the others who take care of our safety and health.

After a recent earthquake in the city of Zagreb, for all citizens who had to leave their homes temporarily or permanently, mobile communications were the only means of communication. Unfortunately, many of the facilities were significantly damaged and require the reconstruction. They had to be removed in case the antenna systems of the base stations were installed on it. The removal of such systems reduces the capacity of mobile communication networks, which can significantly influence the possibility of using mobile communications services in certain areas of the city.

The photos of base stations antenna systems from the center of Zagreb circulating on the Internet represent precisely the systems that had to be removed from earthquake-damaged buildings and are an example of fake news related to 5G technology.

The Republic of Croatia is carrying testing of 5G technology functionality in the 3.6 GHz frequency band. All three operators for mobile communications have requested temporary licenses for radio spectrum testing. HAKOM has issued temporary permits for the technical examination of 5G technology in the areas of the city of Zagreb, including the area of the city of Samobor and the city of Sveta Nedelja as well as Franjo Tudjman Airport the city of Osijek, the city of Rijeka, the city of Split, the Island of Krk, the city of Dubrovnik, the city of Hvar, the city of Novalja, the city of Jastrebarsko, the city of Rab and the city of Bjelovar. Before starting the operation of any base station, the operators are obliged to report all technical parameters to be checked and determine whether the base station operates in accordance with regulations.

HAKOM, as an independent regulator, always monitors compliance of the implemented base stations with the permitted levels of electromagnetic fields (EMF) prescribed by the ordinance of the Ministry of  Health care. If during the verification process of a particular base station there is a suspicion that the EMP levels do not comply with the permitted levels, HAKOM shall conduct additional control measurements on the spot for that station. EMP measurements shall also be made on the basis of justified citizens' requests. All results of HAKOM measurements of EMP are  published within the GIS portal on the HAKOM website, and it is possible to access a detailed measurement report on the link for each measuring point .No base station shall operate in case of exceeding the allowed levels.

Regarding the 5G on human health, the World Health Organization (WHO) published its point of view and concluded that, while respecting the existing international recommendations for limits on electromagnetic field levels, no impact on public health is anticipated. In the Republic of Croatia, the prescribed limit values are stricter than international ones, they have been additionally reduced 2.5. times for public areas when it comes to the power field strength, or 6.25 times if the power density is observed.

HAKOM will continue to consistently control the usage of radio spectrum. Allocation of radio spectrum for 5G and commercial provision of 5G services is expected only in the following period, which will be communicated with the public in due course.

Please support the operation of broadband and mobile communications networks in the Republic of Croatia in order to keep everyone safe and connected, and at the same time we ask all media to limit the spread of fake news. HAKOM will respond to all media inquiries information regarding 5G in Croatia gladly and as soon as possible
