The joint Project of FER and HAKOM gained the PMI’s professional recognition “Project of the Year”

ZAGREB, 10 November 2020 - Professional recognition “Project of the year”, awarded by PMI Croatia (Project Management Institute), will be awarded this year to the project “accessible website for Persons with disabilities”, created as a result of cooperation between the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing of the University of Zagreb (FER) and the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM) in the area of digital accessibility for persons with disabilities. The award for the project of the year will be given on 10 November during a ceremony that will be held online due to the epidemiological situation for the first time.

Several years of cooperation between the Laboratory for assistive technologies and assisted Communication ICT-AAC (FER), led by prof.dr.sc Željka Car, and HAKOM resulted in numerous ideas and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of people with disabilities in digital society. During various joint action processes, the benefits arising from the existence of a digital single point of information on the offers of electronic communications operators for persons with disabilities (AXES), elderly (seniors) and young people (young) have been recognised, where HAKOM and Croatian electronic communications operators could learn and later apply an optimal way of including people with disabilities in the digital environment of their own business activities , based on the real needs of persons with disabilities in Croatia. The idea was carried out by initiating a concrete project with the aim of developing an affordable network seat with information on specific offers of electronic communications operators for the three groups of users (OSI, seniors, and young people). The necessity of connecting all key stakeholders was recognized, and representatives of operators, representatives of persons with disabilities, HAKOM and FER connected through project activities. Accessible web sites can be accessed via a link. One of the results of the conducted research is the publicly available “Methodology for the Development of an accessible Website Headquarters”. The aim of the methodology is to inform all those willing to to improve the accessibility of existing websites or develop new ones without barriers to users, transfer the knowledge gained during the research on the specific needs of users in Croatia with regard to the accessibility of websites and implementation methods.
