Growth of rail freight transport and fewer passengers transported

In the fourth quarter, freight rail undertakings continued to have positive indicators in the transportation of goods in Croatia. Passenger rail transport is still in decline.

ZAGREB, 11 March 2021 - In the last quarter of 2020 the rail freight transport in Croatia carried 5.7 percent more goods and earned 11.5 percent in tonne kilometres compared to the same period last year. The highest growth was achieved by new railway undertakings up to 13.8 percent in transported goods and 23.3 percent in tonne kilometres while at the same time HŽ Cargo d.o.o recorded 3.6 decrease in transported goods, but 3.6 percent more tonne kilometres. In the fourth quarter, the new freight undertakings hold a 57.8 percent share in transported goods and 44.1 percent share in tonne kilometres compared to the HŽ Cargo d.o.o.

By comparing the shares of train kilometres by type of transport, freight transport was 34.6 percent and passenger transport was 65.4 percent. Referring to the freight undertakings, the largest share of train kilometres was by the HŽ Cargo d.o.o. with 56 percent, while the rest was achieved by other 8 active undertakings on the railway market. Freight carriers had an 11 per cent growth in train kilometres, while the passenger carrier reached 2.7 per cent less train kilometres compared to the same period last year.

In the passenger rail transport market, compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year, the number of passengers carried decreased by 35.4% and passenger kilometres by 40.8%.
