HAKOM warns the End Users: Be careful when sending your Personal Data

NEWS

It is an increasing number of the Internet phishing attempts where a fraudulent postal service provider informs the recipient that it failed to deliver the parcel to him and asks for user's personal information for redelivery.

ZAGREB, 4 November 2020 – The Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM) has recently received a large number of applications from users about phishing attempts in which a fraudulent postal service provider informs the recipient via e-mail of its attempt to deliver the parcel. At the same time, there is also a number for tracking the parcel, and users are requested to provide their personal data via the attached Internet link for redelivery. These are deceptive activities aimed at obtaining users' personal data and HAKOM calls on users to pay additional attention if they receive an e-mail of similar content. In situations like this and similar, we advise users to check the provider's e-mail domain (e.g. xyz @name of provider.hr)  in order to determine if this provider exists in the list of postal service providers at all.

We would like to point out that, often from the very text of the message, due to a series of spelling and grammatical errors created in computer translation from another language, it is easy to assume that this is an attempt at online fraud rather than redelivery of the parcel.

Therefore, we warn users not to accept such electronic messages in which their personal data is requested, and if they consider that it is not an Internet phishing, we suggest first contacting the provider’s user service or the sender himself and ask about the status of the shipment in question.
