Lockdown Brings Increase in Rail Freight Transport, Drop in Passenger Transport

PRESS RELEASE

The Corona Crisis generally affected the fall in the freight transport in Croatia in the second quarter, but the rails took over freight transport from other transport modes and recorded growth. At the same time, the temporary suspension of passenger transportation significantly reduced the number of passengers.

ZAGREB, September 18, 2020 - In the second quarter of 2020, in the railway services market in Croatia, 2.5 % more freight was transported than in the same period the year before, and more train kilometers and tonne -kilometers were achieved in the freight transport. These three indicators show that although Corona Crisis generally affected the reduced transport of goods in Croatia, the rail took over a part of the freight transport and recorded growth, such as road or air transport.

Train kilometers share in the freight transport in the train kilometers in total reached 47.7%. The largest cargo carrier was the Croatian HŽ Cargo with a train-kilometer share of 56.3 %, while the rest was realized by 8 new carriers on the market. The indicator of tonne-kilometres performed in the second quarter grew 17.5 % in comparison to the previous year, with the largest increase of 34.3 % being recorded by new freight carriers, while HŽ Cargo recorded a growth of 6.4 %. The new freight carriers also transported 16.2 % more goods and increased their share of tonne-kilometres by 5.7 %, reaching a total of 45.4 % of the generated tonne-kilometres on the railway market. At the same time, HŽ Cargo transported 12.6 % less goods and currently has for 54.6 % share of the total tonne-kilometres.

In the passenger rail transport market, the number of passengers carried decreased by as much as 66.6% compared to the second quarter of 2019. The Croatian passenger transport also realized less passenger kilometres by 67.9 percent and train kilometres by 49.1 percent. The main cause was the decision of the Civil Protection Headquarters of the Republic of Croatia on the temporary suspension of public passenger railway transport from 22 March to 10 May 2020.
