Published Railway Market Monitoring Annual Report

IRG-Rail's report provides an annual overview of market developments and economic conditions in the railway sector, along with a comparison of development and competitiveness within the railway market.

ZAGREB, March 27, 2024 - The Independent Regulators’ Group - Rail (IRG-Rail), a consortium of regulatory bodies for railways from 31 European countries, including HAKOM, has released its 12th annual report on monitoring the railway services market. The report covers the year 2022 and includes data collected from all IRG-Rail member countries.

This report consists of two documents: the "Main Report," which presents the overall results at the European level, and the "Working Document," which provides specific details for individual countries and comparisons among them. The report includes an annual overview of market development and economic conditions in the railway sector, as well as a comparison of development and competitiveness within the railway market over time. In 2022, the European railway market continued to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic but did not return to the level seen in 2019.

Each market monitoring report focuses on one or more topics. This year's report includes a detailed analysis of heterogeneity in the utilization of the European railway network and its potential determinants. Furthermore, the "Main Report" contains new indicators on infrastructure managers, ECTS-equipped networks, train kilometres achieved on electrified lines, and the energy costs of railway operators. Additional indicators are available in the "Working Document" (such as high-speed rail lengths, train punctuality, etc.). The documents can be viewed at the provided link.

Since 2013, IRG-Rail has been publishing annual market monitoring reports on railway services, prepared by the Market Monitoring Working Group.
