Rail Freight Transport recorded a Growth and Rail Passenger Transport recorded a Decrease

The total freight transport by rail increased by 7.8 compared with the first quarter of 2020, while at the same time the number of carried passengers decreased by 7.7 per cent.

ZAGREB, 9 June 2020 - In the railway services market in the Republic of Croatia, in the first quarter of 2020, there were 7.8% more goods transported compared with the same period of the previous year. Eight new freight railway companies participate with 62 percent of the freight transported, while the rest is realized by the Croatian Railway cargo as a historical undertaker.

In the passenger rail transport market, the number of passengers carried decreased by 7.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2020 compared with the first quarter of 2019. In the first quarter of 2020, the passenger undertaker also recorded a 12.5 percent decrease in the number of passenger kilometers performed and 8.6 percent decrease in the number of train kilometers performed.

As for other market indicators in rail transport, there was a 7.2 percent increase in freight train kilometers compared with the same quarter of the previous year. The share of realized train kilometers in freight transport in the realized train kilometers in total is 32.4 percent, while the rest is realized in passenger transport. The largest share of train kilometers in cargo transportation is recorded by the historical freight undertaker of 53.4%. The total number of tonne-kilometers in the first quarter of 2020 increased by 5.0 compared with the same period of the previous year with the largest increase of 28.7 per cent recorded by new freight carriers, while the historical undertaker recorded a decrease of 11.6 per cent. The new freight carriers participate with 50.4 per cent of the tonnage in the first quarter, achieving an increase of 9.3 per compared with the same period last year.
