Switching to the new dual-T2/HEVC System has been postponed for at least 6 Months

PRES RELEASE

HAKOM delays the termination of broadcasting in the DVB-T/MPEG-2 -system and the complete transition to the new DVB-T2/HEVC system.

ZAGREB, 25 March, 2020 - Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM) postponed the deadline for the termination of television transmission in the DVB-T/MPEG-2 system due to measures to prevent the coronavirus epidemic for at least 6 months and for the complete transition to new DVB-T2/HEVC system. All residents of the Republic of Croatia will be able to continue to monitor television programs through existing equipment currently used at least until the new transition date, which will not be before the end of November or the beginning of December 2020. The citizens of the Republic of Croatia will be informed of the new date in due time.  In the meantime HAKOM’s Council brought decision to amend all necessary licenses for the usage of radio spectrum for terrestrial television under the same conditions.

The decision to postpone the transition deadline has been made because it is uncertain how long the epidemiological measures will last and the fight against infection in Croatia and abroad as well as to what extent the availability of receivers would affect the Croatian population. At this moment, it is of great importance to ensure continuous informing of all residents, as well as providing necessary instructions for all students through television programs.

We would like to remind you that there is ongoing transition from DVB-T system with the MPEG-2 coding standard to a more advanced DVB-T2 transmission system, with a more advanced coding standard H.265/HEVC. The viewers of terrestrial television programs can monitor the existing television programs at both standards until their final transition, depending on the receivers they use (DVB-T or DVB-T2).
