Why 5G?

The most important characteristics of 5G in relation to other technologies are high speed, high level of reliability and low latency.

The 5G offers theoretically estimated speeds of up to 10 GB/s, which is 100 times faster than the existing 4G networks. This, for example, will enable the movie to be downloaded in seconds. Most applications will be usable in the cloud, without having to download them to a smart phone, tablet or computer. Remote work will be much easier to achieve, including, for example, work from home, machine remote control, remote patient monitoring, diagnostics, etc.

All citizens of the Republic of Croatia will have equal quality Internet access because 5G will enable broadband access to remote users in the areas where it is not possible or commercially profitable to bring physically the optical infrastructure.

In addition, a very important feature of 5G network is the ability to connect a very large number of devices that will send information to the user, communicate with each other and manage certain processes – Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet of things (IoT). Smart cities will be able to adapt traffic signals depending on current traffic, distribute energy smarter and more efficient, regulate waste collection, etc.

New applications and business models are expected, such as virtual reality, automated vehicles, advanced solutions in industry and agriculture, public safety, financial services, health care (e-health) and energy.

In the future, most vehicles will be connected via 5G network and will be able to communicate and share data with other vehicles and related infrastructure in order to avoid accidents and optimise traffic in the cities. The 5G will also be used in autonomous (self-driving) cars.

The 5G will also be used in critical applications that require very high reliability and small signal delays (latency), which includes precise machine operation in industry, remote patient monitoring and diagnostics, and intelligent transportation systems.
