A Continued growth in Rail Freight Transport and Decline in Rail Passenger Transport
In the third quarter of 2019 the total volume of rail freight increased by 2 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, and at the same time a decrease was recorded by 2 percent in the number of transported passengers.
ZAGREB, December 23, 2019 - In the third quarter of 2019, goods were transported two percent more than in the same period last year. Eight new freight rail carriers account for 52 percent of the freight transported, while the rest belongs to HZ Cargo as a historical carrier.
In the third quarter of 2019 the passenger transport market recorded a 2 percent drop in the number of transported passengers, compared to the third quarter of 2018. and at the same time, the trains reached the goal of 1%. Referring the other market indicators in rail transport, 4 percent more train kilometres were accomplished compared to the same quarter of previous year. The share of train kilometres in rail freight transport in the total number of train kilometres (freight and passenger carriers) is 29 percent. The total number of tonne-kilometres in the third quarter of 2019 increased by five percent over the previous year, with the largest increase of 13 percent by new freight carriers participating with a 38 percent share in tonne-kilometres in the third quarter, an increase of three percent compared to the same period last year.
