Key Role of Regulation in Securing European Electronic Communications

At the Telecommunications Forum, held this week in Austria, the pivotal role of regulation was highlighted by Tonko Obuljen.

Zagreb August 21, 2024.-, At the Salzburg Telecommunications Forum, during the session titled "Secure Electronic Communications at the Crossroads of Technology and Law," BEREC Chairman Tonko Obuljen (HAKOM, Croatia) discussed the key role of regulation in securing  European electronic communications. He emphasized the importance of robust cybersecurity and the resilience of European telecommunications infrastructure and networks.

During the forum, the BEREC Chair informed attendees that this year BEREC has been closely examining the implications of emerging technologies—including cloud computing, software-defined networking, 6G, quantum computing, Open RAN, and AI-driven tools—on the security of European networks and services. European regulatory bodies are actively working to mitigate potential risks associated with these advancements, focusing on their impact on network resilience. In this context, BEREC is also evaluating new security solutions implemented by national regulatory authorities and operators to identify and share best practices and valuable insights across the sector.
Furthermore, BEREC is working closely with the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) to strengthen efforts in addressing cybersecurity challenges, ensuring that electronic communications remain secure and resilient against emerging threats.
