Project Accessibility 2024: Zagreb Central Station Equipped with New Communication Boards

The installed communication boards will make train travel easier for people with disabilities and those who experience communication difficulties.

ZAGREB, 21 November 2024 - As part of HAKOM’s Accessibility 2024 project, aimed at improving accessibility for people with disabilities and fostering an inclusive society where everyone has equal opportunities to use public services, the first communication boards have been installed this week at Zagreb Central Station. These boards are designed to assist individuals with communication difficulties in travelling by rail.

The goal is to extend such equipment to other train stations across Croatia in the coming period, as well as to install them in urban and suburban trains. The project has been carried out through the collaborative efforts of HAKOM, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences (ERF), HŽ Infrastructure Ltd., and HŽ Passenger Transport.

The communication boards, designed to support individuals with communication difficulties, are equipped with symbols related to train travel, facilitating smoother interactions between passengers and staff. In addition to simplifying navigation at railway stations and aboard trains, the boards also aim to raise awareness about the significance of accessibility and the principles of universal design in public spaces.

This initiative brings Croatia’s railway passenger services one step closer to a more inclusive society, where all passengers, regardless of their individual needs, can equally access and utilise public transport.

It is important to emphasise that the development and design of these communication boards involved input from the employees in railway passenger services, station managers, individuals with disabilities from partner organisations involved in the project, and experts from the academic community. Their guidance and expertise were crucial in ensuring the boards effectively meet the needs of all users.
