The European Commission Welcomes Inclusion of the Revised Code of Conduct on Countering Illegal Hate Speech Online in the Digital Services Act

ZAGREB, 21 January 2025 - On Monday, 20 January, the European Commission published a press release emphasising that both the Commission and the European Board for Digital Services welcome the inclusion of the revised Code of Conduct on Countering Illegal Hate Speech Online+ within the framework of the Digital Services Act, which promotes voluntary codes of conduct to mitigate online risks.

The Code of Conduct+, building upon the original Code of Conduct on Countering Illegal Hate Speech Online established in 2016, has been endorsed by Dailymotion, Facebook, Instagram, Jeuxvideo.com, LinkedIn, Microsoft’s consumer protection services, Snapchat, Rakuten Viber, TikTok, Twitch, X, and YouTube.

The Code of Conduct+ Will Strengthen Online Platforms' Handling of Illegal Hate Speech as Defined by EU and National Legislation

The integrated Code of Conduct+ will facilitate compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA) and its effective implementation in addressing the risks of disseminating illegal content through their services.

Following its integration, online platforms designated under the DSA can adhere to the Code of Conduct+ to demonstrate compliance with the Act’s requirement to mitigate the risk of spreading illegal on their platforms. Compliance with the obligations of the Code of Conduct + will be part of an annual independent review to which these platforms are subject under the Digital services Act and which contributes to strengthening transparency and accountability of platforms. The full European Commission press release is available via the following link.
